Perhaps this is why, even now, we’re drawn to settings that evoke a similar experience. This vacation home, in the pristine lakes area of Minnesota, draws on the region’s rich history of human habitation in its design and aesthetic, says interior designer Bruce Kading ASID, CID.

“The owners wanted a cottage-style home that would reference the dwellings that started to appear throughout the area at the turn of the last century.

“The idea was to establish an assumed history for the property, a sense of its having organically evolved over the years. To achieve this look, I specified reclaimed wood for the floors and beams, and a plaster-like finish on the walls. All of the surface materials either have a natural patina or an aged look.”

Kading also worked in conjunction with kitchen designer Carol Sadowsky CKD, whose design expands on the theme of the house having been adapted over the years.

“The kitchen occupies a fairly open-plan space, flowing directly into the dining room and the hearth room, so it needed to relate to those spaces. Equally important was the need to establish a focal point for the kitchen area. The large island achieves this, and its furniture-like design gives the impression that it is separate to the overall design.”

Kading is in full agreement. “The island works as a distinctive item – it establishes the all-important focal point and gives the kitchen its own identity. I’ve further enhanced this by giving it a unique color treatment; and the addition of the pewter top further elevates its status within the room.”

Bruce Kading on IMS

Six months ago if you told me that I was going to be credited as a screenplay writer I would have laughed in your face, or at least arched an eyebrow and backed away from you slowly. I was a copywriter, an ad man. I wrote headlines, not storylines. But here I stand, billed as a writer of a screenplay, and you wanna know what? It feels pretty cool.

When the PFD Studios team dreamt up this idea of a film showcase, we thought, “Oh yeah, that’d be awesome, but the client will never go for it.” Then, the client went for it. We were all elated, but again went back to thinking, “Oh that’s so far down the road, we’ll see if we actually start production.” Then, we got farther down the road. Soon we were concepting treatments for over two dozen short films. Directors were brought in, scripts were being written and revised, auditions were held, roles were cast, and shoot dates were set.

With over 100 cast and crewmembers involved, PFD Studios, along with International Market Square, produced 6 short films in just 6 ½ weeks. It all culminated with a massive premiere at IMS with over 750 people in attendance. Watching it all unfold was like walking on the moon. Personally I’ve never walked on the moon, but I imagine it’s a very similar feeling to attending a film showcase that you helped produce. To see genuine reactions of audiences members smiling, laughing, and even cringing gave me an almost weightless feeling (the booze probably helped too).

After the final film had been shown and the Q & A ended, I began looking around and seeing my co-workers, but they all looked so different. For example, James, our New Media Director, wasn’t a New Media Director anymore. He was an Executive Producer. Our Strategist, Sam, was now an actress. And well I guess for me, I wasn’t just an ad man anymore. I was a screenwriter.

Now this may come off a little self-serving, but I think it’s well deserved. For had you asked me six months ago if a small digital studio and International Market Square would team up to produce and premier a film festival, well, I probably would’ve laughed.

Following trends is fun and interesting and inspirational, but the designers at LiLu Interiors help our clients avoid short-lived trends and incorporate lasting trends that are appropriate for their space and aesthetic. I’d like to argue that what’s trending today is creating a home that is all about you and the things that are important to you. We credit our amazing clients with being our favorite trend-setters. They trust us to create interiors that they have never seen in a magazine. The result is a never-before-seen interior that is perfect for them.

Here are a few interiors that I have the pleasure to work on. None look like “LiLu,” instead each space reflects the client they were designed for. Also, all of these projects incorporate aspects of current trends that I’ll be highlighting this week.
