Designer FAQs

Common questions.  Uncommonly good designers.  Every IMS designer is different.  That being said, each one is dedicated to providing the professional expertise you demand and the positive experience you deserve.  The following are answers to questions frequently asked of IMS designers.

Shadow Underline

1.  Should I ask for work samples, credentials, references, family photos?

Absolutely. The more background you get, the better.  Ask the designer to bring photos of completed projects and/or sample boards of proposed designs.  Even if a designer's portfolio doesn't have an exact "match" to what's in your head, it shows how he or she thinks and how your project would be approached creatively.

2.  My home or the designers' office?

Depends.  Decide how mobile you need your designer to be.  Be honest about your comfort level holding meetings at your home or at the design studio/showroom.  Perhaps there's a middle ground.  For short notice, ask if a phone call or email will do just fine.

3.  How many design solutions can I expect?

Shoot for two or more.  One plan limits your thinking and might put you in a corner later on.

4.  How fast?

When will my project be completed - a couple weeks...months?  This too, depends on a number of variables.  Once again, the key is communication.  Lay expectations out on the table, the calendar.  Be honest.  Be realistic.  Be sure to ask if the designer has a "policy" on changes made during the process.

5.  How does a designer charge for their services?

This is The Question.  Some designers may charge by the hour.  Others may offer a free first consultation then quote a flat fee.  Some may bill a monthly retainer.  Others may purchase products at a discounted price and pass on the savings to you.  The best answer is to simply ask.  They'll be more than happy to explain.

A free money-saving tip: Plan smart early and keep changes to a minimum.  Each piece of the design is tied together.  Even minor changes can require a number of adjustments.

6.  Can I shop alone?

YES: You can always visit IMS with or without your designer.  Once there, you can buy direct in any of the 10 kitchen and bath showrooms.

Then browse the day away at any of the remaining 60+ furnishings, fixtures and accessories showrooms.  However, you'll need your designer in order to make a purchase.

7.  So, how do I get started?

Easy.  Fill out the quick Find a Designer form or Browse Designers to find interior designers who office at International Market Square, including samples of their work.

Or, call IMS at 612-338-6250 to schedule a complimentary appointment with the IMS Design Connection referral service.
